The reports reinforce that integrated water resources management and healthy, functional ecosystems are essential for sustainable development.
 
New SDG progress reports from UNEP, with contributions from the UNEP-DHI Centre are being published at World Water Week, August 2024. The SDG 6 Progress Update Series provides in-depth analysis of progress towards the various SDG 6 targets and identifies priority areas for acceleration. The aim of SDG 6 is to ‘Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all’.
However, a global aggregated analysis of water-related ecosystem data shows 50 per cent of countries are ‘off track’ within the most recent five-year observation period. This equates to 90 countries having one or more water-related ecosystem type in a state of degradation.

DHI offers unified approach to mine water management with launch of MIKE Mine

DHI has released MIKE Mine, a model-based digital twin designed to address inefficiencies in mine water management. In the mining industry, water-related data and models often exist in silos, leading to inefficient management, increased stoppages and lost productivity. Traditional methods require modelling tools to be shared across multiple service providers due to locally stored and inaccessible groundwater data and models. APM Terminals' Pier 400 reduces container rehandles by 90% with DHI’s Yardsafe system

APM Terminals' Pier 400 in Los Angeles is the largest privately-run container terminal in the Western Hemisphere. With safety and efficiency at the heart of this modernised operation, the team at Pier 400 adopted DHI’s NCOS ONLINE Yardsafe system to simultaneously increase yard productivity and improve safety ratings.
 
‘We already have a very high level of safety for our workers. But we continue to seek new ways to improve safety even further, and with NCOS ONLINE Yardsafe from DHI, we have not only been able to reduce the number of toppling incidents dramatically but also to improve efficiency with a 90% reduction in housekeeping moves related to wind events’, explains Rob Byers, Director of Project Management at APM Terminals.
 
 
How it works
The NCOS ONLINE system is an award-winning technology platform developed for ports and terminals to maximise utilisation of marine assets and improve safety and reliability of marine operations.
 
More specifically, the NCOS ONLINE Yardsafe system provides Pier 400 with 48-hour advance warning of container toppling risk in the yard, down to each individual box. Through an interactive, 3D display, operators can see exactly which containers are at risk of toppling based on container position, weight and wind conditions. They can also download a list of critical container moves required to return to a safe operating environment.
 
The power of early warnings‘We include the information from Yardsafe in our morning daily stand-up meeting. When there is wind coming, it is our sole source of truth for both forecasting and actionable intelligence’, says Rob Byers. ‘We’ve had no shutdowns related to wind toppling since we implemented the system in 2023.
 
Yardsafe offers detailed insights into which container stacks are at risk of toppling over and when, reducing unnecessary conservatism in yard operations. In fact, the team at Pier 400 has seen that they will need to move approximately 10% of its empty container inventory due to a given wind event based on warnings from Yardsafe. Prior to implementation, though, they would have moved closer to 100% of their empties.
‘Because we are a highly modernised port, it becomes incredibly complex to shut down individual sections of the port. With the fast and smooth implementation of Yardsafe from DHI, we now have much more efficient operations and an even safer working environment for our people’, concludes Rob.

DHI was part of the Danish space delegation during their visit to Silicon Valley

In May, a Danish space delegation visited Silicon Valley in the US to exchange knowledge on space technology with a focus on satellite data as a tool to support the green transition.
The delegation included representatives from various Danish authorities, universities and companies such as DHI. For over half a century, satellites have been collecting data about our planet, creating an increasingly comprehensive and valuable archive of information. Satellite data allows us to accurately measure, monitor and document development outcomes, providing actionable insights that inform decisions and policies.
Rapid technological advancements have made satellite-based Earth Observation (EO) a revolutionary tool. It provides public authorities and institutions with valuable insights that enhance decision-making, policy formation and operational efficiency. DHI has worked with cutting-edge satellite technology for over 20 years, and as part of the work as an official Research &amp; Technology Organisation (RTO), DHI collaborates with public authorities worldwide to translate theory into practice by developing new and advanced EO-based tools and systems. These tools assist in mapping, monitoring and quantifying the state and dynamics of areas such as agriculture and natural ecosystems.
 
Part of the Danish space delegation to Silicon ValleyIn the last week of May 2024, DHI participated in the Danish space delegation to Silicon Valley, organised by Innovation Centre Denmark Silicon Valley on behalf of the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. The week's programme focused on gaining inspiration and networking on the use of satellite data for the green transition. The delegation visited several companies, authorities and universities in Silicon Valley to exchange practical experiences and discuss applications of satellite-based Earth Observation.
In California's capital, Sacramento, DHI presented two practical examples of public-private partnerships in the use of Earth Observation in Denmark. The first example was DHI's collaboration with the Danish Agricultural Agency, where DHI has developed an automated satellite-based tool over the past seven years to distribute EU agricultural subsidies. The second example was DHI's project with the Danish Environmental Protection Agency, where they have developed a new tool to identify carbon-rich peat soils. This includes a new satellite-based method to map soil moisture for agricultural land and open natural areas across Denmark. The new national Soil Moisture Map is part of the decision-making tools for implementing the Environmental Protection Agency's Climate Peatland Scheme.
By integrating data fusion, edge computing and AI technology and using data from NASA, the European Space Agency and commercial sources, experts can create new insights and application methods. The innovative strengths of the US and Denmark form a strong partnership that can drive advancements in satellite-based Earth observation to support the green transition.

DHI increases focus on development and AI with new CTO

DHI hires experienced IT profile specialised in software development and research technologies, employing Na’Tosha Bard as Chief Technology Officer. Na’Tosha Bard comes from a position as CTO and Senior Vice President at the Danish IT company KMD.
 
Na’Tosha Bard will start as CTO in DHI where she will be in charge of the Technology &amp; Innovation business unit and become member of DHI’s executive leadership team.
Mette Vestergaard, CEO at DHI, states: ’Na’Tosha is an experienced leader with in-depth knowledge of developing successful digital solutions for both the private and public sectors. She will help ensure that DHI retains our leading position within technology and digital solutions for management of water and water environments, e.g. by integrating physics-based modelling with artificial intelligence and machine learning. I look forwarding to a close and positive collaboration with Na’Tosha.’
Na’Tosha holds a degree in Computer Science from Texas Tech University, US. She brings extensive international expertise and a profound technical skillset from her previous roles, including experience in scientific applications and strategic deployments of proprietary and open-source software, enterprise software development and gaming technology. She previously held the position as Chief Technology Officer at the Danish IT company KMD.
Na’Tosha Bard says: ‘DHI is an exciting international company in growth, and the business provides digital solutions, technology and advisory services that help solve global challenges related to water and water environments. I look forward to becoming part of this work and bringing my own experiences into play, not least when it comes to artificial intelligence and machine learning.’

DHI has released MIKE 2024 Update 1, the latest version of the MIKE Powered by DHI software suite featuring advancements across four products within the suite.
 
The latest release includes features, tools and improvements designed to streamline model building, simplify data maintenance and optimise results sharing. Clients with a valid Service Maintenance Agreement (SMA) or subscription can take full advantage of these latest features at no additional cost!   
 
Key features in the MIKE 2024 Update 1 release:
 

MIKE+ enhances usability with several new features: Improved results viewing, MIKE+Py integration on GitHub for Python-based database interactions, expanded Water Hammer simulation results and a new Q-H plot for fire flow analysis.
FEFLOW introduces enhancements in its latest update: An upgraded 3D Supermesh Preprocessing Panel, an enhanced 3D Volumetric Mesh Generator by Geode as well as a new FEFLOW Engine subscription option, which provides access to powerful tools for model calibration and uncertainty analysis at a lower cost.
MIKE SHE releases enhancements aimed at optimising user workflows: Improved processes for model calibration and reporting, enhancements in collection system coupling, offering greater flexibility in analysing groundwater impacts as well as water quality simulation improvements designed to be particularly beneficial for projects where surface flow impact is minimal.
WEST offers advancements to enhance its functionality: The extension of ASM2dMod to include nitrous oxide (N2O) producing pathways, the incorporation of simple photovoltaic and wind energy production models to expand its utility in energy-related analyses, plus a new sample project to showcase the updated influent fractionator for ASM2dMod.
