Malin Alm - a day in the life of a financial controller
Curious about a day in the life of a financial controller? Get to know Malin Alm from DHI’s Sweden office and discover more about her role and what makes the best part of her workday.
Hi Malin, please introduce yourself!
Hello, I'm Malin and I am a finance controller at DHI Sweden. We have four offices in Sweden, and you can find me at our head office in Gothenburg. Our other offices are in Stockholm, Malmö and Växjö.
I live in Gothenburg, just a 30-minute walk from the office. I am married and have two adult children, Erik (27) and Sofia (25). I like to spend the holidays with family and friends at our summer house on Öland, on the east coast.
When did you join the DHI family and how did it happen?
I joined DHI in September 2005. I had been working within the consulting industry before and found it interesting and enjoyed it very much. I applied to DHI with the hope of developing and to contribute to the business.
What does a workday look like for you – and what’s the best part?
My days consist of various tasks in finance and administration. Besides monthly accounting, it´s controlling Work in Progress (WIP), costs, review and analyses balance. Ensure correct accounting, reporting of revenue, profit margins and compliance within the company. We are in an ongoing process of centralising our financial function in the group, which is both developing and challenging. During spring, we handed over our customer invoicing to our Finance Excellence Center team in APAC. We have been committed to achieving a smooth transition and minimising disturbance to keep our core business running. Many thanks to all colleagues involved!
The best part of my workday is whenever I get to work with colleagues, both from our local team and from across offices. It´s very inspiring and challenging to work across and build relationships and connecting with other colleagues. To meet and collaborate online requires time for closer dialogue, ask questions, be curious and interested in building relationships and trust. It´s more efficient to meet, face-to-face. It´s always a pleasure to work closely with colleagues within the finance team – to collaborate by sharing knowledge and to be able to provide good service and support to our business.
What’s something about you that people would be surprised to know about?
I have always enjoyed cooking and reading recipes and I am constantly looking for new inspiration.
