Addressing wetland challenges in South Africa

The Global Wetland Watch (GWW) recently completed a 10-day mission to South Africa focused on advancing global initiatives for wetland management and restoration.
The mission included workshops and field trips designed to address national wetland challenges, explore innovative solutions and advance the creation of a comprehensive global wetland data platform. As wetlands continue to play a crucial role in carbon capture, biodiversity conservation and water purification, the urgency to protect these ecosystems has never been greater. This mission marked a significant step toward providing critical data that will empower countries worldwide to safeguard their wetland habitats.
 
‘This visit reinforced the power of community-driven conservation, proving that sustainable land management can safeguard both nature and livelihoods. It also confirmed our knowledge that protecting wetlands is not just letting nature be alone but can in some cases require significant resources to avoid invasive species damaging the wetlands,’ states Torsten Bondo, Business Development Manager at DHI's Earth Observation Centre of Excellence and collaborator on Global Wetland Watch.
 
The team visited several key wetland sites across South Africa, engaging with over 80 stakeholders from national and local authorities, including environmental and agricultural officials, wetland managers and field specialists. These discussions highlighted the pressing issues wetlands face in the country, including urbanisation, invasive species and climate change, while also emphasising the vital role of data in effective wetland management.
Over the next year, GWW will continue collaborating with pilot countries like South Africa to refine the platform’s capabilities, with the official global portal set to launch in 2026. This initiative will provide countries with essential data on wetland types, habitat conditions and surface water dynamics, helping them to make informed decisions on wetland protection and restoration.
‘Seeing firsthand the delicate balance between human impact, ecological function and conservation efforts in South Africa, everyone in our team left with a deeper appreciation for the urgent need to protect and restore these invaluable ecosystems. GWW work is even more urgent for us now!’, adds Torsten Bondo.
As GWW moves forward, the team remains committed to delivering actionable insights and solutions for the global conservation of wetlands, ensuring these ecosystems continue to thrive for generations to come. 
 


DHI appoints international profile with expertise in business development and innovation to the board

Thomas G. Schmidt joins the Board of Directors at DHI A/S, bringing extensive international experience and a strong background in strategy, business development and technology to the company. He replaces Michael Rosenvold, who has been a member of the board since 2018. 
DHI has appointed Thomas G. Schmidt, an international profile with expertise spanning strategy, business development and innovation, to its Board of Directors at the company's annual general meeting.
 
Thomas G. Schmidt has more than 27 years of experience with strategy and business development from McKinsey &amp; Company. Over the course of his career, he has held leadership roles at McKinsey’s offices in Copenhagen, Los Angeles and Santiago de Chile, and served as managing partner for McKinsey in Denmark. In addition to his tenure at McKinsey, Thomas G. Schmidt is an experienced board member and entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of 21st.BIO, a company leveraging advanced technology platforms to address some of the world’s most pressing resource challenges. 
 
Jakob Thomasen, Chairman of the Board of DHI, says:

DHI’s results for 2024 show strong growth and major investments in research, development and innovation, driving impressive bottom-line performance. With an organic growth of 11.3% and a total revenue of EUR 147.0 million, DHI has achieved its strongest financial results to date.
DHI is seeing an increasing need for methods and tools that can help governments and companies overcome global challenges related to water and the environment. The company’s 2024 results mark the highest revenue in its history, following another year of impressive double-digit growth. DHI remains committed to significant investments in research, development and innovation, with a total RD&amp;I investment of EUR 15.4 million in 2024.
Order inflow totalled an all-time high of EUR 170.1 million in 2024. Revenue increased organically by 11.3%, setting a new record at EUR 147.0 million. EBITDA more than doubled from the year before, ending at EUR 5.0 million, while EBIT was EUR 2.4 million for the year, also a significant improvement from last year.

DHI continues to prioritise research and development in knowledge and digital solutions to, for example, forecast cloudburst impacts in cities, predict extreme wave conditions at future offshore wind farms and protect coastal areas from erosion and flooding.
’We are investing heavily in research and innovation and have pooled all our research and development initiatives into a new global centre. In close collaboration with our clients and partners, we develop knowledge, data and technology that contribute to solving the global water and environmental challenges’, states Mette Vestergaard. 
Innovation for a sustainable futureIn 2024, DHI launched several new products that enable analyses and simulations of changes in water environments. An example is DHI BlueCast, which helps clients in the offshore industry identify optimal locations for offshore wind turbines in areas with varying ocean depths and complex current conditions. An expansion of the FEFLOW software has improved the solution’s ability to forecast fluctuations in groundwater. In 2024, DHI took part in 2,800 projects globally, focusing on better water management, climate adaptation and sustainable development.

Invitation to free testing of floating offshore wind turbine concept at DHI

DHI is excited to offer a unique opportunity for developers and innovators to test their concepts for Floating Offshore Wind Turbine (FOWT) foundation for free in our offshore wave basin. This opportunity is part of the ongoing FloatLab project, funded by Innovation Fund Denmark.
FloatLab will help lower the threshold for enterprises to test new ideas and concepts for floating foundations. The tests will allow for high-level proof of concept and improvements in an early phase of development or optimisation of existing foundation designs.
We are offering two weeks of access to our offshore wave basin. You will bring the physical model of your scaled FOWT foundation, and we will assist you with two weeks of testing.
Submit your floating offshore wind foundation concept for evaluation, and we will select the most innovative and promising design for offshore wave basin testing. We will choose the concept with the highest level of innovation and potential for the floating offshore wind industry. Our wish is to engage the academic and industrial floating wind community with the FloatLab project results and increase awareness of the benefits of physical model tests.

DHI is part of Swedish-Danish stormwater innovation project

The newly launched Opti-SITE project aims to develop innovative methodologies for identifying optimal locations for nature-based stormwater solutions in urban areas, leveraging high-resolution radar data and artificial intelligence (AI). Opti-SITE is a collaborative Swedish-Danish research initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience of the Öresund region.
&nbsp;
Urbanisation and climate change have led to increased stormwater volumes in cities, resulting in flooding, overloaded wastewater treatment plants and discharges of untreated wastewater. Many cities face an urgent need to find sustainable solutions for their overburdened stormwater systems.
&nbsp;
The Opti-SITE project aims to answer this need by:
&nbsp;

Developing a methodology to identify suitable areas for nature-based stormwater solutions using high-resolution radar data and AI
Promoting smart climate adaptation and sustainable stormwater management in cities
Providing a now-casting system to proactively reduce risks

&nbsp;
Combining artificial intelligence with nature-based solutionsDHI will develop advanced machine learning models to be incorporated into hydraulic modelling. Our expertise in AI and data analytics will be instrumental in identifying key characteristics of suitable areas for nature-based stormwater solutions. By integrating these insights into machine learning models, DHI aims to determine the most effective infrastructure scenarios that maximise efficient stormwater management while minimising adaptation costs.
‘Nature-based stormwater solutions are efficient climate adaptation measures and can provide multiple benefits to a city, but it is often difficult to find suitable places for implementation in densely populated areas, says Maria Roldin, Project Engineer in Water Supply &amp; Urban Drainage at DHI.

‘With the tools developed within Opti-SITE, we can increase the use of nature-based stormwater management, thus enhancing the transition towards sustainable cities.’
Furthermore, DHI will assume primary responsibility for implementing a decision support system within the project. This system is expected to result in a prototype module integrated into an existing digital platform, supporting decision-makers and consultants in identifying the optimal locations for effective nature-based solutions.

A Swedish-Danish research collaboration &nbsp;The Swedish city of Landskrona and a selected area of the Danish city Copenhagen have been selected as case studies for development and tests in the Opti-SITE project. Opti-SITE is funded by Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak, an EU programme focused on promoting cross-border collaboration. The research partners are Sweden Water Research as the main coordinating partner and Aalborg University, the Danish utility HOFOR, Kristianstad University, Lund University and the Swedish utility NSVA.
‘The Interreg Secretariat looks forward to the partnership working on cross-border solutions for a highly relevant topic and developing transnational solutions to a shared challenge. The Opti-SITE application received a record-high quality score of 42 out of a total of 45 points, placing it at the very top within the Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak programme,’ states Niels Boye, Programme Officer at Interreg Öresund-Kattegat-Skagerrak.

New resilience centre set to prepare Denmark for an uncertain future

DHI is part of the new Resilience Center Denmark. The centre seeks to strengthen the development of knowledge and solutions that will help companies and organisations meet new demands for increased resilience to threats to critical infrastructure and society as a whole. The centre brings together the efforts of the seven Danish Research &amp; Technology Organisations to promote growth and export of resilience technologies – ultimately making Denmark more robust and resilient.
Flooding, cyberattacks, fires, supply chain disruptions, terrorism, power outages, hybrid warfare and pandemics. The list of threats to Danish companies is long, and the likelihood of incidents affecting business operations is increasing.
In response, the seven Danish Research and Technology Organisations (RTOs) have joined forces to create Resilience Center Denmark. The centre aims to drive the development of innovative solutions that enable suppliers to help companies become more robust and less vulnerable to the growing threat landscape.
Creating business opportunities and helping companies
Resilience Center Denmark will strengthen Denmark's technological capacity in societal security and emergency preparedness and develop new technologies to enhance public safety. The centre will ensure access to the latest and most advanced technologies for strengthened societal security by focusing on the following key tasks:
 

Research and development: The centre conducts research and development across various technological areas, including flood simulation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and drones.
Technology transfer: The centre demonstrates and transfers new technologies to businesses and critical societal functions for practical application.
Collaboration: The centre collaborates with Danish and international research institutions, private companies, industry organisations and authorities to advance the development of new technologies.

 
Initially, the focus is on supporting suppliers developing resilience technologies and solutions for businesses, including creating standards and certification schemes that foster an effective and transparent market. This will help companies comply with NIS2 and CER legislation, which come into effect in 2025. The NIS2 directive primarily addresses cyber and information security, whereas the focus of the CER directive is on protection of both physical and digital critical infrastructure considering threats such as natural disasters, sabotage and supply chain disruptions. 
‘We focus on bringing research and technology closer to businesses so they can leverage the opportunities created by the new legal requirements. This is a unique chance for Danish companies to strengthen their competitiveness,’ says Jesper Florin, Head of Resilience Center Denmark.
A national contact point for resilience and robustness
All seven Danish RTOs contribute their unique expertise to Resilience Center Denmark, forming a powerful resource for creating a more robust and resilient Denmark. This strong position establishes the centre as a national contact point for enhanced resilience, accessible to both businesses and public authorities.
‘DHI has decades of experience in supporting preparedness planning, trainings and simulations focused on infrastructure related to water environments,’ explains Thor Danielsen, head of DHI’s Danish business unit Water in Cities.
‘As an example, our digital solutions enable water utilities to respond swiftly and accurately to a crisis. Our aim is to gather Danish stakeholders in water and wastewater management in a hub to facilitate a space where the sector can collaborate on developing new solutions, knowledge, guidelines and ultimately, resiliency for Denmark.’
Resilience Center Denmark and the seven Danish RTOs
Resilience Center Denmark is a national collaboration between the Alexandra Institute, Bioneer, DBI, DFM, DHI, FORCE Technology and the Danish Technological Institute. The centre is supported by funding from the Ministry of Education and Research's performance contract funds, with an annual grant of DKK 7.8 million from 2025 to 2028. This funding enables the centre to promote research and development that strengthens Danish companies' position in the international market for resilience technologies.
‘Resilience Center Denmark aims to drive a strong market for resilience technologies that not only makes Denmark more robust but also provides Danish companies with a global competitive advantage,’ says Carsten Damgaard, Research Director at DBI.
