Integrated modelling of water quality in urban areas
This two-day thematic course provides the theoretical basis for the modelling of integrated urban water systems. It includes some interesting case studies of practical applications and hands-on exercises based on the WEST software
Both policy makers and the industry are increasingly realising the necessity of adopting an integrated approach to water management. Urban water management presents big challenges, but also great opportunities to minimise both the impact on the receiving water (and on the environment in general, e.g. energy and materials consumption, pollutants emission) and on costs. Options such as water quality based real-time control, sewer operation minimising odour and corrosion problems, global sewer control, construction of retention volumes and treatment facilities, water reuse, nutrient recovery, etc. can be better designed and evaluated using models that include the interaction between all units involved. Optimising individual subsystems may not be the best solution for the entire system. The integrated assessment of the system provides the opportunity to develop holistic solutions and/or the justification for prioritising implementation plans in a manner that will yield the best value and greatest benefits for the receiving water.
